Students wishing to take Non-Beginners' Spanish must have obtained a minimum Grade H4 in Spanish in the Leaving Certificate Examination (or equivalent). Students who have studied Spanish at second level and obtained a Grade below H4 can join the Beginners' Spanish course.

In addition to the general regulations for passing the year, students must pass HS2101 or HS2102 (10 credits)

Students should refer to the Department for registration protocol of elective modules and guidance on appropriate module choices for Teaching Council.

Students are only permitted to take one other peninsular language apart from Spanish in Year 2 as part of their optional module choices.

Students who have not taken Spanish in Year 1 may take it as a new subject in Year 2, subject to timetable constraints.

Subject to having completed a total of 30 credits of Spanish in Years 1 and 2, students may spend either two semesters in a Spanish-speaking country (study at partner institution and/or work placement), or one semester each in a Spanish-speaking country and in a country of a second language studied in Years 1 and 2 (study at partner institutions or one semester study at partner institution and one semester work placement). All courses taken during Year 3 will be assessed by the approved Host University.

Students who have taken HS1101 in Year 2 may take Spanish as a 20-credit, 15-credit or 10-credit subject (see requirements for Year 2) in Year 4, subject to timetable constraints: in addition to general regulations for passing the year, students must pass HS2101 or HS2102.

In addition to the general regulations for passing the year, students must pass HS3001 (10 credits).

Students are only permitted to take one 5-credit peninsular language from the Year 2 option list, and cannot choose a module they have studied previously. They are not permitted to take any other Year 2 modules.

Students may take only one LL module.

Students who have not taken Spanish in Year 1 or Year 2 may take it as a new subject in Year 4, subject to timetable constraints.

Programme Learning Outcomes for BA (Hons) (World Languages) NFQ Level 8, Major Award
On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:
- demonstrate a high level of linguistic competence in each of the languages studied, and at a level commensurate with the number of credits taken;
- read texts at an appropriate level in each of the languages studied and perform tasks based on their comprehension;
- communicate in writing at an appropriate level and in a range of registers in each of the languages studied;
- perform tasks based on aural comprehension and communicate orally at an appropriate level and in a range of registers in each of the languages studied;
- demonstrate awareness of aspects of non-linguistic communication relevant to each of the languages studied;
- engage in meta-linguistic discourse: i.e. discuss, describe and analyse language as a system;
- read and analyse a range of texts (including film and audio-visual texts) pertaining to the culture(s) of one or more of the languages studied;
- convey their knowledge in critical essays and oral presentations, using the critical vocabulary and methodologies of the relevant disciplines.
