The Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Social Studies is an non-professional alternative exit award for students registered on the Master of Social Work or Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work Studies who:
- have passed all Year 1 modules on the MSW/PDSWS but choose to end their studies at that point or;
- have successfully passed at least 60 credits of taught modules but failed a fieldwork placement element offered to candidates on the programme.
Candidates who opt to exit and graduate with Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Social Studies will not be eligible to apply to register with the Social Work Registration Board (CORU).

Programme Learning Outcomes for Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Social Studies (NFQ Level 8, Major Award)
On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of social systems and human behaviour to promote social change, problem solving in human relationships and the empowerment of people to enhance their well-being;
- Demonstrate knowledge of social policy to critically examine and respond to the impact of social and political contexts;
- Recognise the application of principles of social justice, human rights and anti-oppressive practice in the provision of social welfare services;
- Critically appraise the influence of research, theory, legislation, policy, official inquiry reports and international conventions on the delivery of contemporary social services;
