Candidates on the MA (Music and Cultural History) programme who pass at least 60 credits of taught modules may elect to exit the programme and be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Music and Cultural History.

In special circumstances, students may be able to select courses offered by other departments which they have not previously completed. The student makes their selection in consultation with the programme director. The elective module should complement those already being studied elsewhere in the programme and offer the student a significant addition to their skillset that is pertinent to the overall aims of the degree. Module choice may be constrained by timetabling and capacity factors.

On successful completion of this programme students, should be able to:

• Demonstrate an understanding of the intellectual history and theories of the discipline of musicology and identify key trends and developments in recent musicology;
  
• Apply a range of critical methodologies to notated, performed, and recorded music;
  
• Identify salient features of music and communicate their findings effectively;
  
• Reflect critically on the engagement between musicology and related disciplines;
  
• Display critical research, writing and presentation skills, in connection with musical scholarship;
  
• Exhibit fluency in discussing and writing about music and its cultural contexts;
