Overview
The Postgraduate Certificate Infection Prevention and Control is a part-time programme delivered online, running for 8 months from the date of first registration for the programme, currently September to April. Students study one module at a time, to meet the needs of working professionals.
Successful completion of the programme with, a minimum of a Second Class Honours Grade 1, supports progression to the MSc in Infection Prevention and Control. This path also supports an exit option with a Postgraduate Diploma in Infection Prevention and Control.

Programme Learning Outcomes for Postgraduate Certificate in Infection Prevention and Control (NFQ Level 9, Special Purpose Award)
On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the principles and practice of infection prevention and control.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the appropriate management of infections caused by different pathogenic microorganisms.
- Describe the transmission of endemic and epidemic infections from sufficient knowledge of the characteristics and transmission of causative organisms.
- Describe appropriate methods for control of hospital and community acquired infectious diseases and infections.
- Discuss the principles of microbiology in the prevention and control of infection.
- Design, implement and evaluate co-ordinated control methods utilising tools such as audit and surveillance.
- Discuss and apply effective quality improvement and patient safety strategies.
- Discuss and implement management and leadership theories and practices applicable to infection prevention and control.
