The BSocSc (Hons) (Youth and Community Work) is a three-year full-time degree programme. All applicants are expected to have the equivalent of one year's relevant experience as a volunteer activist or full-time worker. 

To be eligible for the award of the BSocSc (Hons) (Youth and Community Work) Degree, a student will be required to have achieved 180 credits by obtaining 60 credits in each of First, Second, and Third Social Science (Youth and Community Work). A student may not register for more than 60 credits in one year.

Student Vetting Policy and Procedure

Attendance

As the BSocSc (Hons) (Youth and Community Work) is a professional training programme, youth and community work students are reminded that they are bound to attend every class of each module (and every tutorial, class meeting, placement session, placement supervision and placement two-way or three-way meeting), unless unavoidably prevented from doing so. All absences must be satisfactorily explained in writing to the Year Tutor. If a student's attendance falls below 80% in any module, s/he will be required to repeat that module before being allowed to proceed.

Year 1 - Social Science (Youth and Community Work)

In First Social Science (Youth and Community Work) students study prescribed modules to the value of 60 credits.

Year 2 - Social Science (Youth and Community Work)

No student may register for Second Social Science (Youth and Community Work) until he/she has passed the First University Examination in Social Science (Youth and Community Work). In order to be admitted to the Second University Examination in Social Science (Youth and Community Work), a student must have satisfactorily attended prescribed modules to the value of 60 credits in all of the subjects of his/her programme.

UCC Diploma in Youth and Community Work progression pathway

Students who have achieved a 2H2 grade in the Diploma in Youth and Community Work from 2025 onwards may apply for entry to Second Social Science (Youth and Community Work). Students who wish to progress to Second Social Science (Youth and Community Work) should notify the School of Applied Social Studies in writing of their intention to do so by the first Friday of July at the end of their second year of studying the Diploma in Youth and Community Work. Upon successful completion of the Diploma in Youth and Community Work, students who have notified their intention to progress, and who have satisfied specified criteria for attendance, placement practice requirements and interview may register for Second Social Science (Youth and Community Work).

BSocSc (Hons) (Theory and Policy in Youth and Community Work) Year 2 - Alternative Degree Pathway for Students not Proceeding to Third Year - Social Science (Youth and Community Work)

The BSocSc (Hons) (Theory and Policy in Youth and Community Work) is an alternative degree pathway for students who do not satisfy the pass standard for the professional practice/placement modules in Year 2 (SS2107) of the BSocSc (Youth and Community Work) programme over the Summer and/or Autumn Supplemental Examinations.

Such students may opt instead to register for the BSocSc (Hons) (Theory and Policy in Youth and Community Work) (BSocScTPYCW (Hons)) and take an alternative two of the following 5 credit non-professional practice modules: SS2004, SS2007 and SS2025 in Second Year, and four of the following 5 credit non-professional practice modules: SS3005, SS3006, SS3008, SS3011, SS3015, SS3016, SS3019, SS3033SS3045, SS3118 in Third year.

Note: Students who are required to take these alternative, non-practice based modules, will continue with all other modules of the BSocSc (Y&CW) programme in both Second and/or Third Year.

Year 3 - Social Science (Youth and Community Work)

Only students who have passed the Second University Examination in Social Science (Youth and Community Work) and satisfied all other requirements specified for the Second Year, will be permitted to register for Third Social Science (Youth and Community Work). In order to be admitted to the BSocSc (Hons) (Youth and Community Work) Degree Examination, a student must have satisfactorily attended prescribed modules to the value of 60 credits in all of the themes of his/her programme.

BSocSc (Hons) (Theory and Policy in Youth and Community Work) Year 3 - Alternative Degree Pathway for Students not Completing Third Year Social Science (Youth and Community Work)

The BSocSc (Hons) (Theory and Policy in Youth and Community Work) is an alternative degree pathway for students who do not satisfy the pass standard for the professional practice/placement modules in Year 2 (SS2107)  or in Year 3 (SS3107 and/or SS3104) of the BSocSc (Youth and Community Work) programme over the Summer and/or Autumn Supplemental Examinations.

Such students may opt instead to register for the BSocSc (Hons) (Theory and Policy in Youth and Community Work) (BSocScTPYCW (Hons)) and in Third Year take as an alternative any four of the following 5 credit non-professional practice modules: SS3005, SS3006, SS3008, SS3011, SS3015, SS3016, SS3019, SS3033SS3045, SS3118.

Notes:

  • Students who pass SS3104 and fail SS3107 in Year 3 of the BSocSc (Y&CW) programme over the Summer and Autumn Supplemental Examinations, may opt to register for the BSocSc (Theory and Policy in Youth and Community Work) (BSocSc TPYCW 3 (Hons) and will only be required to take two 5 credit modules (10 credits in total).
  • Students who are required to take these alternative, non-practice based modules, will continue with all other modules of the BSocSc (Y&CW) programme in both Second and/or Third Year.
