NFQ Level 9, Major Award

The MA (History) is a full-time programme running for 12 months or a part-time programme running for 24 months from the date of first registration for the programme.

Postgraduate Certificate in History

MA Candidates who pass 30 credits of taught modules may opt to exit the programme and be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in History.

Postgraduate Diploma in History

MA candidates who pass Part I and opt not to proceed to Part II of the Master's programme may register for HI6085 and, on successful completion of HI6085, are awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in History. Students must submit HI6085 to the School by the second Friday in September in the same academic year or may register for HI6085 in the following academic year (part-time), following completion of Part I.

Candidates who pass Part I and opt to proceed to Part II of the Master's programme and who fail, or fail to submit, Part II may register for HI6085 in the following academic year (part-time), and upon successful completion, will be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in History.

A dissertation of a maximum of 20,000 words must be submitted by a specified date in September at the end of year one (for full-time students) and at the end of year two (for part-time students).

Programme Learning Outcomes for MA in History (NFQ Level 9, Major Award)

On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

• Demonstrate a critical awareness of the major issues and problems within the study of history including public history;
  
• Incorporate and evaluate insights and findings that are informed by scholarship at the forefront of the field of history;
  
• Articulate findings and communicate judgements cogently and coherently in a variety of oral and written forms and settings;
  
• Locate and appraise a broad range of primary and secondary sources related to history;
  
• Identify and apply methodologies appropriate to undertaking research in history;
  
• Complete a research driven dissertation.
